This is the International Women Human Rights Defenders Day.
Call out gendered violence when you see it: victim-blaming, catcalling, inappropriate comments, sexist jokes, and the idea that it is women and girls' responsibility to avoid 'dangerous' situations. Read the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls' Calls for Justice and consider how you can act on them.

WHAT ARE THE 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM, AND WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?
The 16 Days of Activism campaign calls for action against one of the world’s most persistent violations of human rights – violence against women. |
GBV refers to harmful acts directed at an individual based on their gender. It is rooted in gender inequality, the abuse of power and harmful norms. It places women and girls at risk for multiple forms of violence. (edited from UN Women) It takes many forms: domestic violence, sexual harassment or assault, child marriage, psychological or emotional abuse, human trafficking, stalking, femicide, female genital cutting/mutilation, and online/digital violence.

“We are no longer accepting the things we cannot change. It’s time to change the things we cannot accept”. Angela Davis
The 2021/22 year saw Oshawa's Advocacy Group pursuing the theme of “Aging in Place” and preparing a document for our club members to use as a reference in their own aging journey.
During the 2022/23 year we plan to continue that theme by joining the fight for change as led by Seniors for Social Action Ontario, a social advocacy organization.
We need to steer Ontario towards a 21st Century Care system that includes:
Did you know in September of 2020, there were 70,180 residents living in long-term care institutions? Of these 48,184 or 69% had "no significant disability". If ever there was proof that we need a much better system of in-home and community-based residential programs these numbers show it.
Data source: Continuing Care Reporting System, 2020/21, Q2 data cut, Ontario Ministry of Health, extracted February 2021.
Join SSAO by emailing them. If you are on Facebook join them there too. If you have friends in other organizations (RTO or PROBUS perhaps) ask them to join as individuals and as an organization. Numbers count in the eyes of the government.
Members, join us on the 3rd Monday of the month at 2pm via Zoom. Get the link from Donna H.

We need to steer Ontario towards a 21st Century Care system that includes:
- all options,
- costs less and
- is more sustainable for future generations.
- end the mass institutionalization of older adults and
- promote direct funding along with
- in-home and community-based alternatives.
